A walk-off left Niles Vikings Varsity on the wrong end of an 8-7 defeat to Kalamazoo Central on Tuesday. The game was tied at seven with Kalamazoo Central batting in the bottom of the seventh when Matt Bau singled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run.
Despite the loss, Niles Vikings Varsity did collect seven hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Kalamazoo Central had nine hits on the way to victory.
Niles Vikings Varsity opened up scoring in the first inning, when Kade Wagley grounded into a double play, scoring one run.
After Niles Vikings Varsity scored two runs in the top of the fifth, Kalamazoo Central answered with two of their own. Niles Vikings Varsity scored when Cade Vota doubled on a 1-0 count, scoring two runs. Kalamazoo Central then answered when Brooks Hemingway singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run and Bau’s sac fly scored one run for Kalamazoo Central.
Hilario DeLaPaz earned the victory on the hill for Kalamazoo Central. He lasted one inning, allowing two hits and two runs while striking out one and walking one.
Cole Simpson took the loss for Niles Vikings Varsity. He lasted five innings, allowing six hits and six runs while striking out three and walking zero.
Cole Hemingway started the game for Kalamazoo Central. He allowed five hits and five runs over six innings, striking out two and walking one.
Vota went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Niles Vikings Varsity in hits.
