Niles Vikings Varsity stole the lead late and defeated Dowagiac 3-2 on Tuesday. The game was tied at one with Dowagiac batting in the top of the sixth when an error scored one run for Dowagiac.
The pitching was strong on both sides. Cole Simpson struck out ten, while Dowagiac pitchers sat down two.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Niles Vikings Varsity tied things up at two when Ethan Alkire singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run. With Mason Waggoner batting, Alkire would score the winning run on a wild pitch.
Simpson was the winning pitcher for Niles Vikings Varsity. He allowed eight hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out ten and walking one.
Duan Simpson took the loss for Dowagiac. He went two-thirds of an inning, allowing one run on one hit and walking zero.
Hunter Brackensick started the game for Dowagiac. He surrendered two runs on five hits over six innings, striking out two.
Kyle Beckwith, Drew Gourlay, Alkire, Simpson, Cade Vota, and Mason Waggoner all had one hit to lead Niles Vikings Varsity.
Brackensick went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Dowagiac in hits.
Niles advances to play Lakeshore on Saturday, June 1st at South Haven in the second game of Districts.
