Niles Vikings Varsity Stays In It Against Portage Northern, But Eventually Falls
Niles Vikings Varsity could never quite get over the hump against Portage Northern, so eventually Portage Northern prevailed 6-2 on Thursday. The game was tied at two with Portage Northern batting in the bottom of the fifth when Brady Young doubled off of Jakob Huffman, driving in one run.
Portage Northern captured the lead in the second inning. With two outs in the second inning Gannon Andrews drove in one run when he singled.
After Niles Vikings Varsity scored one run in the top of the third, Portage Northern answered with one of their own. Niles Vikings Varsity scored when Drew Huffman singled off of Tyler Helgeson, driving in one run.
Niles Vikings Varsity knotted the game up at two in the top of the fourth inning. Jake Lalone drove in one when he singled in the fourth inning.
Helgeson earned the win for Portage Northern. He threw seven innings, allowing two runs, ten hits, striking out five, and walking one. Jakob Huffman took the loss for Niles Vikings Varsity. He tossed five innings, allowing six runs, eight hits, striking out one, and walking one.
Niles Vikings Varsity collected ten hits. Huffman, Bryce Lake, and Huffman each collected multiple hits for Niles Vikings Varsity. Lalone and Huffman each drove in one run to lead Niles Vikings Varsity.
